Novelty books of August

In August 2010 the Institute of History of Ukraine, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, published the long-awaited second volume of Ivan Mazepa’s letters compiled by Vyacheslav Stanislavs’kyi (Ivan Mazepa’s letters / Compiler and author the introductory study V. V. Stanislavs’kyi – К.: Institute of History of Ukraine, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, 2010. – V 2: 1691–1700. – 2010. – 752 pp.).
The book continues the publication of epistolary heritage of Ivan Mazepa, which is chronologically limited with political milestone events – uprising of Petro Ivanenko and the beginning of the Great Northern War. The edition is intended for researches, professors, students and all those who are interested with Ukraine’s past.
Simultaneously, the next book about Ivan Mazepa was published in Kharkiv in Russian language under general editorship of Mykola Mazepa – “Hetman Mazepa. Encyclopaedic directory” (Kharkiv: Oberig, 2010. – 304 pp.)

ANGELS ADORNING IVAN MAZEPA’S PALACE IN BATURYN

This article with gallery of colour illustrations in PDF examines the rare glazed ceramic and terracotta tiles featuring the angels or putti that ornamented stoves at the ambitious principal residence of Hetman Ivan Mazepa in his capital city of Baturyn. Their fragments have been discovered during the excavations of the palace’s remnants. This publication presents the computer graphic reconstructions of two complete tiles and the most expensive and ornate majolica multicolour tiled stove of Mazepa’s headquarter which was destroyed during the ravaging of Baturyn by Russian troops in 1708. These tiles testify to the wealth and fine art adornments of his palace and also demonstrate the assimilation and dissemination of the putti motif of the Renaissance tradition in the decorative applied art of Cossack Ukraine promoted by Mazepa. The Identity of the Ukrainian Hetman Ivan Mazepa and the Appropriation of His Legacy by the russians

We present to your attention an interesting project created by a team of scientists, journalists and public activists. In the descriptions of the video, the authors noted: «In the second episode of the documentary narrative podcast 'Why Do They Steal?,' we explore the legacy of the Ukrainian Hetman Ivan Mazepa. We delve into the ongoing lack of understanding of the significance of this historical figure. This episode investigates the russian aversion to anything associated with Mazepa while harboring a desire to appropriate the Hetman’s legacy. For instance, the Lev (Lion) cannon, rushed by the russians to become a symbol of their empire, was left uncharged. Or consider the Pigeon Bell, awkwardly rescued and subsequently mishandled, leading to its ultimate breakage. Moreover, we examine why, even after 300 years, the russians can’t get over Mazepa. The material was prepared with the support of the International Renaissance Foundation.
